Lingua Trek: transforming foreign language education in Europe through digital game-based approach

About the project

Lingua Trek aims at improving the quality of English language teaching in Europe by encouraging its use in authentic contexts.

Hybrid training for teacher professional development will equip language teachers with an innovative method of teaching through the use of digital games, and the implementation of the digital game will provide opportunities for students to actively use the language in real-life situations, while fostering cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.

Project Results

LINGUA TREK will develop three project results:

– R1. A detailed game scenario document and accompanying learning materials outlining the game objectives that align with the principles of digital game-based language learning.

– R2. A fully functional mobile game that has been tested and refined through formative evaluations.

– R3. A hybrid teacher professional development training aiming to help teachers gain the necessary skills about how to effectively integrate Lingua Trek into their teaching practices.

VIRGEN DE LA ROSA SCHOOL

Virgen de la Rosa has been a private school in the city of Burgos for the last 54 years. There are 14 units of Pre-primary, Primary, and Secondary Education, with over  320 students, from the ages of two to sixteen.

The school belongs to Fundación Caja de Burgos, a non-profit organization that works for the social benefit of the city of Burgos.

Our educational proposal, inspired by the principles of humanism, aims at the training of men and women who can approach the ideal of knowledge and character, which define a full existence and successful journey along life.

Throughout the educational process, our school makes explicit reference to certain fundamental values, developed through the axes of culture, solidarity, initiative, nature and socialization.

Each student is treated as a unique human being, with his/her strengths and weaknesses.  All of them are regarded as individuals, with particular attention to diversity and specific special needs. We consider that early detention of difficulties, diagnosis, and derivation to specialized services in the cases which require it, and collaboration with other institutions, are fundamental when you have to give a specific answer to students’ diversity.

We can say that there are so many aspects of diversity in students as the number of students in the center, however, it is also true that there are students who, in some circumstances, both temporary or along their whole lives, require a more specialized answer. Our aims are of a broad scope:  to achieve the student’s total integration in the educational center, whatever his/her own circumstances and characteristics are, to succeed in the total development of his/her potential, facilitate the adequate educational answer from teachers and achieve total social integration among their fellow students.

There are currently 25 teachers at the school, most of them eager to collaborate in European programs, three of which are active this year, reason why we need to be a numerous Erasmus+ team in order to cope with all the objectives and activities. There are ten teachers who usually travel with KA2 mobilities with students, apart from other eight who have participated in KA1 mobilities.

Each year more teachers at the school get involved in our Erasmus+ projects, either with in-school activities with their students or in the mobilities.

Our staff is usually the same. Besides, a group of four people are especially involved in the projects: they inform and train new staff.

THE 4TH PRIMARY SCHOOL OF NAFPLIO

Our school is located in the city of Nafplio, in the Municipality of Argolida. It is, in terms of its student resources, the most populous school in the city. It is attended by 304 students, aged from 6 to 12 years, divided into 16 departments. The staff of the school unit is complete and sufficient to meet the teaching requirements of the school curriculum. The number, the scientific and pedagogical training and the experience of the teaching staff meet the specific needs of the school and the requirements of the Curriculum. It is also complete regarding to the administrative, special scientific and supportive staff, in terms of the requirements related to the support of the teaching and administrative work of the school, the satisfaction of the individual and social needs of the students and issues of cleanliness, maintenance and security of the school building.

Our school has got 39 teachers of various specialties, including 2 English teachers, 2 PE teachers, 4 French and German teachers for the 5th and 6th graders, a Music teacher, a Drama Education teacher, an Arts teacher and an ICT teacher. The 4th Primary School of Nafplio was involved in a Comenius school partnership mobility from 2005 to 2007 and it has been awarded for the implementation of eTwinning projects with National and European Quality Labels. The last few years, it has focused on developing the digital skills of its teachers and students. Today, the school is participating in innovative projects (OSOS, Selfie, Skills Labs), eTwinning projects (eTwinning School 2021-22, 2023-2024), pioneering digital competitions (CodeWeek, Bebras, Scratch), and holds the bronze medal for the actions it has implemented for internet safety for the “European e-safety label”. Moreover, we currently participating in an Erasmus 210 as partners (with Lithuania and Turkey) and we have been awarded the accreditation for 2021 – 2027.

Teachers collaborate and interact with Greek and Foreign schools through the eTwinning platform and students present their projects on our school website. The website was created in 2017, aiming at ensuring transparency and dissemination of our work to society. Our teachers provide quality work and facilitate students to use digital educational tools to make presentations and playful assignments, search and properly manage information from the internet and create educational digital material (blog, digital games).

Our school consists of 304 pupils aged 6 to 12 years old. The majority of them come from middle-class families living in the neighborhood, while there are several children whose parents work in Nafplio and commute from nearby villages. Moreover, the pupils’ characteristics vary in terms of learning skills, nationality and cultural background. Two students are provided with support by two special needs teachers, while there is a small percentage of 2% who attend integration classes, which address their various learning disabilities and difficulties, on a daily basis. Furthermore, regarding racial and ethnic minorities, 4% of students are refugees coming from the Balkan peninsula countries, while 1,5% belong to the Roma community who are provided with support to enhance their attendance and achievement rates. Finally, the school nurse provides help to specific students, and First Aid to those in need.

ÂNGULOS E ARGUMENTOS LDA

Colégio São José de Bairros is a private educational institution located in Lousada, one the Portuguese towns with the youngest population in Europe. Our school is a well-established institution committed to academic excellence and dedicated to preparing students with the skills necessary to prepare them for the real world.  Our educational scope welcomes pupils aged 3 to 18, with a total enrollment of 280 students, including about 20 students with special educational needs. The company is located in south-eastern Poland in the city of Rzeszow. Danmar has extensive experience in developing modern web and mobile applications that are used for educational purposes. Danmar also has long-term experience of carrying out European projects within which company’s R&D staff conducts research and prepares trainings tailored to the needs of various learners. During 20 years, Danmar has successfully implemented over 70 projects within Grundtvig, Leonardo da Vinci, Progress, Erasmus+ and recently HORIZON2020. In many of these projects Danmar was responsible for designing and coordinating dissemination strategies. Innomate is a company that offers professional development seminars and develops software tools for teachers, educators and facilitators who want to be more effective in their teaching experience. Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (ZBEUN) is a public research university located in Zonguldak, Black Sea region of Turkey.
